Ianto made sure to make some noise as he made his way to Lisa’s workstation. He knew she could be working and it was best not to surprise her when she was working with scavenged alien tech. He paused in the doorway, knocking softly on the frame.
Lisa turned and glanced at him over her shoulder, smiling.
“Ready for lunch?” he asked.
“Just give me a moment to finish up.”
Ianto nodded and watched as Lisa finished up and finished up. His eyes narrowed as he made out a small bright blue dot that on the back of her head. He turned trying to find where the dot came from, tracing its origin back to the piece of alien tech that Lisa had been working with. Frowning, as he noticed a high pitch whine, almost as if something was being charged.
Ianto moved without thinking, covering Lisa’s body with his own as he pushed her out of the way. The machine fired, creating a hole in the wall where Lisa’s head had been.
Ianto kept his gun trained at the intruder, glaring at the other man.
“How’d you get in here without setting off the alarms?”
“That’s the thing with time travel,” the intruder began, “sometimes you just end up inside a place and bypass all those alarms.”
“What are doing here?”
“I came to see Jack, need his help for something, do you know where he is? And can you put that gun, I promise I’m not dangerous.”
“According to the Torchwood Charter, you are”
“And Jack said, he changed things here.” The Doctor muttered to himself.
“He did,” Ianto stated.
The alien’s eyebrow rose slightly, “Well, certainly doesn’t look like from here.”
“Jack’s not here and just because he trusts you, doesn’t mean I do.” Ianto told the other man. “I don’t know what happened when he went with you last time, but I know he came back hurting.”
“Ah, I just need to talk to him, surely that can’t do him any harm”
Ianto considered the other man. He was tempted to shoot, but knew Jack would be upset if he did. Ianto lowered his weapon as he said, “Don’t you dare hurt him again.”
“Idiot!” Jack bellowed, as he pressed against Ianto’s shoulder. “What the hell were you thinking?!”
Ianto stared at the other man, panting, because being shot hurt. “Wasn’t”
“That was obvious,” Jack muttered softly. Ianto could make out the concern in his eyes and smiled at the sight.
“I just reacted, didn’t want to see you hurt.” Ianto added, shuddering as he thought back to just a few minutes. He’d spotted the gunman and barely had time to push Jack out of the way.
“I heal faster than you,” Jack pointed out.
“You still can be hurt.”
“I know, just try not to get yourself hurt on my account.” Jack said softly, before pressing a his lips to the younger man’s forehead. “I’m not really ready to lose you.”
“I’ll try,” Ianto agreed.
Jack twisted, looking over his shoulder. “What’s taking Owen so long?”
Ianto squeezed the trigger, his aim was true, hitting his target square in the head. The other man was dead, before he hit the ground. Ianto stared at both his gun and his target. Even though this man had threatened the others, even though he’d tried to kill everyone on the team, Ianto had never wanted to be a killer. He had to protect the team though and if that meant killing, then so be it. Ianto would learn to live with the blood on his hands.
Ianto slowly edged closer to the dead man, needing to be sure that this nightmare would be over. The other man was truly dead and Ianto pulled away, going to retch in a corner as what he had done finally sunk in completely. When his stomach had settled, Ianto began taking care of the body. He wasn’t sure how Jack would react to finding out about this. Ianto had no idea if he should tell Jack the truth or if he should just make the body disappear and make sure that Jack never found that he’d killed John Hart.
